Hot Honey Mustard Ham and Swiss

The last time I made these, Tristan ate like 9. No joke. These sandwiches are messy, so they are probably not the best choice for a first date… but on the other hand, they are delicious so maybe they are the perfect choice…

Its not a frequent item in our house, but we had a leftover package of Kings Hawaiian Sweet Rolls from our weekend trip, so I figured, why not? That’s when I added ham to the Instacart order and ended up with enough ham to feed 15. Now we will be trying to figure out ways to use a ton of ham along with the ton of cheese we are still getting through…

Anyway, here it is!

Ingredients:

  • One package of Kings Hawaiian Rolls, cut in half- if you do this carefully, you should be able to do it without taking the buns apart.

  • Thick cut Ham- enough for about 12 sandwiches, but an entire ham is too much.

  • Two hand-fulls of spinach- this is optional, but my opinion is if you’re going to smother something in sauce and cheese, you should at least add a vegetable.

  • 1 package of Swiss cheese- about 9 slices

  • 1/4 an onion- chopped very fine

  • 2-3 garlic cloves- minced

  • 3 tbsp Dijon Mustard

  • 1/4 c hot honey- regular is fine too

  • 4 tbsp butter

  • Poppy seeds for sprinkling- optional

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  • Cover the pan in foil- I don’t always do this but when I’m going to be pouring a sauce over something, it tends to be a good idea.

  • Place the bottom section of the buns on the pan.

  • Layer the ham, then cheese, then spinach on the buns.

  • In a small pan- heat the butter until its melted. Then add the garlic and onion and cook for couple minutes- 3 to 5.

  • Use a silicone brush and brush the tops of the buns with part of the butter mixture- I do this without removing the mixture from the pan.

  • Next, add the mustard and honey to the pan with the butter and heat until well combined and runny.

  • Drizzle the sauce mixture over the spinach.

  • Place tops of the buns over the bottoms and sprinkle with poppy seeds.

  • Loosely cover the buns with tin foil and place it the oven. (I made a mistake here and forgot to cover. They ended up a tad too crunch, but still edible and no one complained.)

  • Bake about for 10 minutes or until the cheese is fully melted.

  • Serve and enjoy!

Learn from my mistake- cover your buns!
